BHSO State Park in Culver City, California.

It’s the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook State Park in Culver City in California.

At the base of Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook State Park lies the toe of the western ridge. A platform at the top of the world-famous workout stairs offers panoramic views of the Los Angeles Basin. From Jefferson Blvd or the Scenic Overlook, the main hiking trail winds up a steep, one-mile route.

A zigzag trail follows the rubble staircase formed from the demolished structure that once stood atop the hill. The park's 58 acres are crowned by an easy loop trail. Visit the park during the spring, summer, and fall for native wildflower displays, bird watching, picnicking, and connecting with the parks cultural and natural heritage. In addition to a Culver City theater, a conference room and interactive exhibits, the Visitor Center features a small theater. It is available for special events, weddings, and meetings.

In the Los Angeles Basin, the 65-acre project site was a geographic landmark as an empty hill with an abandoned aerospace structure nearby. Vista Pacifica was a 200-unit housing complex planned by a developer since 1999. The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy purchased the site on behalf of California State Parks in 2010 to establish a flagship urban park in Southwest Los Angeles County, thanks to timely community organizing and critical legislative action.

 

Planning with local stakeholders took place for a year before the park in Culver City opened in 2006. A variety of amenities are offered for park visitors by the Conservancy, including the native plant pavilion, Jefferson Streetscape and crosswalk, Hetzler Pedestrian Path, and a variety of other features.
